VOLATILITY GUIDE
India VIX explained
India VIX is a volatility indicator derived from Nifty option prices. It reflects the market’s expectation of near-term volatility, not the direction of the market.
What does India VIX measure?
India VIX is designed to represent expected volatility over the near term based on option-market prices. A higher reading generally means the options market is pricing greater expected movement.
Does a high VIX mean the market will fall?
No. VIX measures expected magnitude of movement, not direction. It often rises during market stress, but it can also increase ahead of major events even when the subsequent move is upward.
Why traders watch VIX
- Option premiums are influenced by implied volatility
- High VIX can mean more expensive option premiums
- Event risk can cause volatility to expand before the event and fall after it
- Position sizing often needs adjustment when volatility changes
VIX and option selling
A high implied-volatility environment can increase option premiums, but that does not automatically make option selling safer. Sharp underlying moves and volatility expansion can produce large losses.
