What is IPO GMP?

A practical explanation of IPO grey market premium for Indian investors — including what it can and cannot tell you.

IPO GMP meaning

IPO GMP, or Grey Market Premium, is the unofficial premium or discount at which an IPO application or share may be discussed in the informal grey market before the stock lists on an exchange. If an IPO has an upper issue price of ₹100 and market participants quote a GMP of ₹20, the informal indication is ₹120. That is not a guaranteed listing price.

Key point: GMP is not published by NSE, BSE or SEBI. It is an unofficial market signal and can change sharply before listing.

How estimated listing price is calculated

A commonly shown estimate is simply upper issue price + reported GMP. For example, ₹100 + ₹20 = ₹120. This arithmetic does not account for demand changes, market volatility, institutional flows, price discovery on listing day or sudden news.

Why does GMP change?

  • Subscription demand and anchor participation
  • Overall market sentiment and sector performance
  • Valuation compared with listed peers
  • News about the company or offer
  • Availability and demand in the informal market

What is Kostak rate?

Kostak rate is a grey-market term for the price reportedly paid for an IPO application, regardless of whether allotment is received. Like GMP, it is informal and unregulated.

Should you apply only because GMP is high?

No. A high GMP can fall before listing. Investors should also study the red herring prospectus, business model, financials, use of proceeds, promoter background, risks, valuation and peer comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is IPO GMP legal?

The grey market is unofficial and unregulated. GMP should be treated only as an informal market indicator, not exchange data.

Can GMP be negative?

Yes. A negative GMP means the informal market is indicating a price below the issue price.

Does high GMP guarantee listing gains?

No. Listing price is determined by actual exchange-market demand and supply when the stock begins trading.
